Christchurch will host the Comedy Gala for the first time in nine years on May 3.

The final three acts for the Best Foods Comedy Gala have been confirmed, rounding out a line-up led by host Dai Henwood at Christchurch Town Hall. The event is part of the NZ International Comedy Festival, with the Christchurch showcase backed by $10,000 in Christchurch City Council funding.

The newly announced performers are United Kingdom comedian Danny Ward, local comedy magician Logan Kitney, and long-running Christchurch improvisation troupe The Court Jesters. They join previously announced names Hayley Sproull, Ray O’Leary, Angella Dravid and Guy Williams, plus Australia’s Felicity Ward, Scotland’s Rosco McClelland and emerging locals Ben Vyas and Dan Boerman.

Who is in the Christchurch Comedy Gala line-up?

Danny Ward arrives with more than 17 years on the comedy circuit and a reputation for tight storytelling and quick crowd work. Festival organisers have also booked The Court Jesters, the rotating cast behind the long-running improv show Scared Scriptless at The Court Theatre.

Kitney, who moved from Auckland to Christchurch several years ago, will bring a mix of illusions and stand-up. The booking places him on a bill that blends touring acts with local performers, at a venue that has hosted major comedy events and television recordings.

What Logan Kitney says about finally getting the Town Hall stage

For Kitney, the appearance is personal after years in the audience at the Town Hall.

“That show has been the goal from day one for me. So it's a very, very special moment,” Logan Kitney said.

He recalled sitting in the auditorium watching headline comedy shows and imagining his own turn.

“I have sat in that town hall and watched so many shows, 7 Days Live, [visiting US comedian] Tom Segura, lots of comedians in that room, and I just thought, ‘man, what I would give to stand on that stage’. And here I am going to do it."

Why the Comedy Gala is returning to Christchurch after nine years

Logan Kitney rehearses energetically backstage at Christchurch Town Hall, with stage props and dramatic lighting visible.
Rehearsals are underway for the Christchurch Comedy Gala, hosted by Dai Henwood and featuring new acts.

Comedy Galas will also run in Auckland and Wellington, but Christchurch’s return follows lobbying from local comedy professionals who pushed for a dedicated presence in the city. Christchurch-based comedian Clayton Carrick-Leslie, a trustee on the New Zealand Comedy Trust board, said the board was excited to bring the showcase south.

“The Christchurch I grew up in was a hotbed of comedy, from the TV skits of McPhail and Gadsby in the 80s, to the comedy improv popularised by the Court Jesters in the 90s,” he said.

“Now, with a burgeoning stand-up scene orbiting around Good Times Comedy Club in St Asaph St, it’s never been a better time for the NZ International Comedy Festival to have a dedicated presence down here.”

The council’s arts and events team leader, Lucy Blackmore, said the show would offer a big night out while also promoting local performers and bringing different voices to the Town Hall stage.

How Christchurch City Council funding supports major events

The Comedy Gala’s Christchurch date was made possible after $10,000 in council support, a small slice of the wider pool used to attract and underwrite arts events. Christchurch City Council outlines its event funding approach and aims through its events and festivals information on its official website.

For readers tracking other council-backed attractions in the central city, Open Christchurch has already released its 2026 programme with 52 buildings.

Blackmore said the gala would help strengthen the city’s creative sector and make use of a venue that draws both local audiences and touring productions. The Town Hall has increasingly hosted big public events as the city’s post-quake rebuild settles into a new rhythm.

How to get tickets and what to expect on the night

Tickets for the Best Foods Comedy Gala in Christchurch are on sale through the festival website at comedyfestival.co.nz. The show is scheduled for Sunday, May 3, at Christchurch Town Hall.

The gala format typically moves quickly, with short sets from a range of comedians rather than full-length solo shows. That structure allows audiences to see established names alongside newer acts in one sitting.

For a sense of how other cities are building their own cultural calendars this year, the Smokefreerockquest national final is returning to Wellington after two years away.

As Christchurch draws bigger crowds to entertainment precincts, event organisers have also kept an eye on audience safety and transport planning, especially for younger patrons. Recent incidents, including the case where Christchurch students suffered head injuries after bottles were thrown, have sharpened attention on crowd behaviour at public gatherings.

The Christchurch Comedy Gala will take over the Town Hall stage on May 3.
